Alcohol can feel like the only way to switch your brain off, ease social anxiety, or get through another hard day, until you realise it’s also been keeping you disconnected from yourself.

I’m Meg, a trauma-informed alcohol recovery coach, and I’m kicking off Conscious Unbottling by sharing the real story behind the mic: years of hiding anxiety, using alcohol to cope, and the quiet cost of losing confidence, self-trust, and direction.

After giving up alcohol four and a half years ago, everything changed, not overnight, but through healing. The hardest part wasn’t missing the drink; it was meeting the authentic version of myself underneath it. We explore the nervous system, core wounds, self-worth, boundaries, and how to build a life you no longer want to escape from.

But Conscious Unbottling is about more than alcohol. It’s about unbottling the pain, shame, trauma, beliefs, and emotions we’ve carried for years instead of numbing them. In future episodes, we’ll have honest conversations about alcohol freedom, trauma-informed healing, somatics, people-pleasing, perfectionism, relationships, narcissistic abuse recovery, identity, and purpose, with practical coaching tools and expert guests.

Whether you're questioning your drinking, already alcohol free, or simply craving a more meaningful life, you're in the right place. Follow the podcast, leave a review, and share it with someone who needs to know it's never too late to change.

Welcome And Host Introduction

SPEAKER_00

Hi and welcome to the very first episode of Conscious Unbottling Podcast. I'm Meg, a trauma-informed alcohol recovery coach. I was previously the co-host of two different podcasts, Not Drinking Today and Laughs Without Lager. I co-hosted these with two exceptional women, Bella and Allie, and both podcasts and both women taught me so much. But now it's time to branch out on my own. So this new journey for me is really, really exciting. This is something I've always wanted to do. Well, since I knew about podcasts. But it's just now that the timing is right and I can put all of my love and effort into this. If you'd told the younger version of me that one day I'd have my very own podcast talking about my passions and purpose, I would have said, no way. You see, I've lived with social anxiety for most of my life. And as an extrovert in many ways, it was something I had to hide. And I hid it really well. So eating, drinking, and speaking in front of people terrified me. Not because I didn't want to do it, but because I would shake my hands, my mouth. And so I hid behind alcohol because it relieved the symptoms.

For years, alcohol became my way of masking those feelings. And in doing that, I lost confidence, I didn't trust myself, I did not follow my dreams, I got into relationships that weren't good for me, you name it. Then, four and a half years ago, I made the decision to put down the alcohol, and that was the beginning of my healing journey. As I started working through my own wounds, a life I never thought possible began to unfold. I studied to be an alcohol recovery coach through the Snaked Mind Academy. I absolutely loved that course and the other coaches I met. I knew I'd found where I belonged when I did that course. Then I studied

trauma-informed coaching and narcissistic abuse recovery coaching. All of those areas are my passion, alcohol recovery, trauma, and narcissism. And the reason for that is that I have lived experience with all of them. So my podcast will come from my heart, from my life, and from what I have studied and learnt along the way. This podcast isn't about having all the answers or getting everything perfect. It's about showing up anyway. It's about choosing courage over comfort. It's about stepping out of our comfort zones so we can really live. And whether it's putting down the wine, healing old wounds, setting boundaries, leaving a relationship, or finally finding your voice, growth almost always asks us to step outside our comfort zone. So if you're feeling scared about making a change in your own life, I hope this can be your reminder that you don't have to feel fearless to move forward. Whether you've found this podcast because you're curious about changing your relationship with alcohol, you're already alcohol free, or you're simply looking for a deeper way of living, then this podcast is for you. I truly believe you're here for a reason. So let me tell you about the name of this podcast. Conscious unbottling means so much more to me than simply putting down a bottle of alcohol. Yes, it's about consciously choosing to stop numbing ourselves with alcohol, but it's also about unbottling everything we've kept bottled up and have carried around for years. The pain, the stories, the beliefs, the shame, the trauma, the emotions we've pushed down because we didn't know how to deal with

them. Because here's what I've learned. Not only through my own journey, but through working with so many incredible women, alcohol was never really the problem. For most of us, it was the solution. It was the thing that helped us cope. It helped us quiet our minds. It helped us get through stressful days, difficult relationships, loneliness, overwhelm, anxiety, motherhood, careers, life. And while alcohol may have been helping in the short term, it was also keeping us disconnected from ourselves. When I stopped drinking, I thought the hardest part would be not having the alcohol and feeling like I was missing out. I was wrong. The hardest, but ultimately the most rewarding part was meeting my authentic self, the me that was underneath the drinking. It was learning who I really was, healing the parts of me I'd ignored for decades, understanding my nervous system, recognizing my core wounds, learning why I reacted the way I did to things. It was building self-worth, setting boundaries, finding my voice, and creating a life I genuinely didn't want to escape from anymore. That's what this podcast is about. We're going to have honest conversations about alcohol freedom, but we're also going to go much deeper. We'll talk about trauma, core beliefs, the nervous system, somatic healing, people pleasing, perfectionism, relationships, narcissistic abuse, self-trust, identity, purpose, and what it really means to heal from the inside out. Some episodes will just be

What We Will Talk About Here

me, where I'll share practical tools, coaching insights, and things I've learned through my own experience and through supporting other women. Other episodes will feature amazing guests who have their own stories of healing, recovery, and transformation, along with experts who can help us better understand ourselves. My hope is that every time you listen, you'll walk away feeling just a little less alone, a little more understood, and a little more hopeful that change really is possible, because I truly believe it is. You don't have to stay stuck. You don't have to keep surviving, and you certainly don't have to keep believing that alcohol is the answer. The freedom you're looking for isn't found in another drink. It's found in coming back to yourself. So wherever you're listening from, whether you're walking the dog, driving to work, folding the washing, or sitting with a cuppa, thank you for trusting me enough to spend this time with me. I'm so grateful that you're here. If this episode resonates with you, I'd love it if you'd follow the podcast, leave a review, or share it with someone who needs to hear this message. Because together we can help more women stop numbing, start healing, and reclaim the lives they were

always meant to live. So thank you so much for joining me for this very first episode of Conscious Unbottling. I cannot wait to share this journey with you. I'll see you in the next episode.
